HOW THE MACAYA FOUNDATION MADE A DIFFERENCE
From humble beginnings, back in the year 2000, the Macaya Foundation has blossomed into a fully fledged charitable organization, serving the needy among the destitute populations of Haiti and improving their living conditions.

We started with modest means, by collecting from the local communities of Haitians who believed in the cause and our desire to help, such items as used clothing and shoes, canned goods, medical supplies being discarded by local hospitals making room for new stocks.  We collected funds by organizing events sponsored by well known Haitian artists musicians and with the money raised, we were able to consolidate shipments into maritime containers and pay for the transport of the goods to the island.

We then followed up with regular visits to Haiti, providing food assistance through distribution in various neighborhoods where poverty is rampant.  Our group was often joined by volunteer medical doctors of various specialties so not only were we able to offer compassion and encouragement to the unfortunates, in addition we were able to alleviate their sufferings by providing a minimum of healthcare with professional diagnostic and complemented by appropriate medication.

We are now in the process of expanding those basic services by undertaking certain projects, now in the planning stage.

Our new status entitles us to operate legally as a non-profit organization and as such, exempt from federal income tax under section 501 c 3 of the internal revenue code.  Hopefully, we will be successful in raising the necessary funds enabling us to pursue our goals of reaching more people and provide a full range of additional services as described in the foregoing.

Presently, using ambulances available locally, trained medical technicians are able to provide basic care among the population in a limited area.  The ultimate goal is to have fully equipped outpatient clinics equipped to attend to the most urgent cases before they can be transferred to a regular hospital facility.

Another step will be to provide classroom facilities in some rural areas to initiate among the illiterate inhabitants the fundamentals of reading and writing.  As competent teachers become available, we will move on to more basic elementary studies.  We are mindful of the fact that charity work has to be complemented by adequate education in order to break the cycle of poverty.

In order to acquire the necessary skills allowing individuals to become useful participants in their communities, they must first posses the basic art of reading and writing; only then will they cease to be entirely dependent on charity to sustain themselves.

Needless to say, in order to achieve our goals, we will count on the generosity of all those who in their hearts wish to contribute, even participate in these noble undertakings.  We make a special appeal to all the readers of our message of hope: you can make an enormous difference in our ability to attain our goals and our ability to continue bringing humanitarian relief to the poor in Haiti.  Your funds will enable us to acquire food, medicine, clothing as well as school material to launch a school program.  And once we acquire those items here, we need the funds to prepare container loads for shipment to Haiti.

We face an enormous challenge; yet we have come a long way from our beginnings.  With your help, we will meet the challenge and accomplish our objectives.
